In northern Manhattan is a neighborhood few outside of New York City have heard of called Washington Heights. The region is aptly named. Steep cliffs rise above the Hudson River, affording breathtaking views both up and down the historic waterway as well across the river to the even higher cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades.
Central to the neighborhood of Washington Heights are the three major parks, Highbridge Park, Inwood Hill Park, and Fort Tryon Park. Ft. Tryon, named for the last British governor of New York, commands the most spectacular views, ones that will remain forever unspoiled by civilization's encroachments. Among the most beautiful sections of the park are the famous Heather Garden and Linden Point, overlooking the Hudson.
The park also includes The Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval monastery and collections, among them the famous Unicorn Tapestries. The area, which boasts the last remaining unsettled land on the island of Manhattan, including some virgin forest, never fails to provide inspiration.
